Dr Megan Deutsher – Profile
Megan Deutsher is the founder and manager of Believe, a popular and successful personal training business.
Megan is a qualified Personal Trainer (Certificate III & IV in Fitness) and a Master Functional Trainer.
She also holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology and psychophysiology. Megan earned her PhD in psychology from the Brain Sciences Institute and worked for 10 years in clinical and research psychology.
Megan’s psychology background gives her a knowledge base extending far beyond that of personal training alone. She is in a unique position to assess psychological barriers her clients face and to apply psychology principles to all aspects of her coaching including new habit formation and motivation.
Megan combines her two passions – psychology and fitness – to provide a distinctive personal training experience.
Health and fitness is as much about mental and emotional well being as well as feeling physically strong, capable and energetic. My clients have different needs and priorities at various times in their lives. Each person’s goals are unique. My job is to help define those goals and then guide and support my clients to get there”.
As a mother of two and manager of a rapidly expanding business, Megan knows what it’s like to be busy.
I’m always on the go. I’m up early to train myself, get the kids ready for school and prepare for the day. During school hours, it’s back to back clients. When school’s out, I’m busy ferrying the kids to netball, football or drama and trying to steal quality time with them in the car, or at the kitchen bench or while they’re doing their homework. Over dinner, I enjoy my family’s company, and then I head back out to the gym for the night time sessions with clients.
Megan knows her clients are time-poor. Most of them have conflicting professional, family and social commitments. They want quick, effective training programs with maximum results. Megan takes account of these issues when designing programs.
Megan has always been interested in sport and fitness. In high school, she was involved in athletics and netball. While studying she maintained her health with aerobics and cycling classes and was introduced to water skiing. During her pregnancies and after giving birth Megan joined the Les Mills craze and could often be found in Body Pump, Body Step, RPM or Body Balance classes. Megan has always embraced an active lifestyle and gets outdoors as much as possible.
These days it’s water skiing she prefers. Every chance they get, Megan and her family are out on the water. Double skis. Single skis. Wakeboards. You name it – Megan and her family are out there having a go. This hobby has given Megan and her family a lot of enjoyment.
But in 2007, a water skiing accident put Megan’s active lifestyle on hold. The accident left Megan with a shattered femur bone and severed quadriceps tendon. After being bed ridden for six weeks and in a wheelchair for three months Megan began the task of learning to walk again. Frustration followed as she fought to re-wire what she thought was a “natural” movement pattern.
Countless days were spent telling myself “heel to toes” as I stared across the other side of the room, willing my leg to move but physically not knowing how to get there.
It was 12 months before Megan could walk without a limp and 2 years before she was taught to run. As a result Megan understands the importance of CORRECTING FAULTY MOVEMENT PATTERNS, PATIENCE WITH THE SMALL STEPS and the MENTAL TOUGHNESS required to beat the physical barrier. Four years of rehabilitation later and two years of strength and fitness training, Megan is fitter and stronger than before, even running and water-skiing again. But it wasn’t an easy path. And Megan’s struggle has given her a new perspective and helped to shape her priorities.
Megan’s inspirational story “Do I wan’t to walk today?” is a fascinating insight into the accident and her struggle to overcome adversity. An interesting read, essential for understanding Megan’s passion for movement and zest for life.
Megan’s training programs are designed for the individual. She specialises in short and intense workouts which are guaranteed to produce results with the right level of commitment and accompanied by an appropriate nutrition plan. She is looking forward to working with you to start or continue your fitness journey.
